Hey Guys, we’re back into the swing of things for 2019 and it’s shaping up to be another great year for Hosting-Australia. To start the year off we’re going to go over a few quick things you can do to minimise the number of headaches your website could give you this year.
The first thing I’d suggest is regularly updating your sites CMS. Whether it’s Wordpress or Joomla or Drupal, all sites need to have their content management system updated regularly to minimise the risk of it breaking and also being breached by anyone with not so good intentions. All you need to do is backup the site before updating the plug ins and CMS to the latest versions.
Check the security hasn’t picked up any suspicious activity (If you have a firewall) and that’s it. We highly recommend this practice as it is one of the most effective ways of minimising crashes and breaches. You have to be pretty vigilant with it, being that you should be updating your CMS once a month, but we actually provide a service where we do these for you every month. So you get the peace of mind with none of the headaches.
Another is to add an SSL to your domain, also known as a Secure Socket Layer. Basically, an SSL encrypts any data transferred between you and your customers, but not only does it provide this safety and peace of mind to your customers, Google also very highly values SSLs, they even go as far as ranking sites with SSLs higher than those without on their search engine. Once again, Hosting Australia can assist you with this.
Next item on the list is to add DKIM, DMARC and SPF to your DNS in your cPanel, these are just methods for authenticating incoming and outgoing mail. If you have these records then you won’t have nearly as much trouble with those incoming spam emails and also won’t have to worry about outgoing emails being bounced back to you, as they are more or less stamped with an ‘approved’ sticker. As per the above, just ask our support team for help!
Lastly, I recommend contacting our support team for a site audit, which is pretty much where we go through your site, check the loading times, the security, whether it has an SSL or if it’s redirecting properly, just looking for little quality of life adjustments that you could make to improve your site for you and your users. If you’d be interested contact our friendly support team for pricing and we can look at ironing out any wrinkles your site may have.
All 4 of these are relatively simple to do and go a long way in improving the health of your hosting. With the DKIM, DMARC and SPF it only needs to be done once, the SSL is on a 1- or 2-year license. The audit is easy as well, just submit the request and leave the rest to us. The only thing that requires you to be a bit vigilant is the CMS updates as they need to be done fairly regularly, but as I mentioned before we can even do that for you each month.
If you can stick to even one of these resolutions, you’ll really notice the difference in your site, whether it be increased traffic and business or just less of those “ugh” moments that can sometimes come with webhosting. Our support team will happily answer any questions you may have and are always willing to lend a hand.
As always please share with anyone who may have a use of any of these resolutions. See you next time
