The most famous breach of recent times, involving one of the cloud photo storage giants iCloud, was dubbed "The Fappening" and occurred back in September 2014. (See details here). Whilst some of the blame was pointed at insecure passwords and users storing passwords on other other devices which had already been infected by viruses or malware, which in turn allowed hackers to retrieve the passwords, it will never really be known how the leak occurred. Apple may know but its not in their interests to admit to that of course.
In reality, it was probably simply a game of numbers. Sites such as iCloud or Instagram are targets for these hackers. They know where they are and how they work. They draw the attention of hackers like moths to a flame...and not just one hacker, but groups...and not just one group, but hordes. It was simply a matter of time until a hacker found a vulnerability on one of the sites and was able to illegally gain access. Even now, its just a matter of time until the next breach occurs.
For a day to day user, hacking may not be a major concern...but have you stopped to consider who else can see your images, even those that are not hacked? The online giants of image cloud image sharing are like a public gallery and unless you have the multi layers and levels of security set right...anybody could potentially be seeing your images. Even if you do have it set right, what happens if a friend shares or posts an image of you. Are their settings correct?
Sure, you may be ok posting a picture of yourself in your speedo's or bikinis, for your friends to see. But do you want the rest of the world seeing it and doing who knows what with it? Ask yourself, would you take all the pictures around your house, and place them out along your front fence for passerby's to see?
TAKE BACK CONTROL!
Best of all, having your own gallery means you can set permissions, choose what images you can and cannot post, set user passwords and control exactly who and how people view your private images.
Use watermarks, or download restrictions to protect your valuable images.
