Online Support & Community
Both platforms have some great Crowd Support options, and if you get stuck, generally you can find an answer online. But from Hosting-Australia.com's experience, Joomla is marginally ahead. Primarily based on the content on the official website, joomla.org in comparison to wordpress.org. The Joomla site is more geared to online communities, and fostering a supportive network, whereas WordPress seems intent to rest on their laurels as the more popular CMS. There are also some arguments that WordPress is geared towards hosts that charge a premium for hosting services, with support options built in...which may be part of the reason there is a lack of enthusiasm for an online community.
WINNER - Joomla
Ease of Use for new Users
Hands down this one goes to WordPress. Its much simpler in orientation and layout, with less complex structures to deal with and a much flatter learning curve. But keep in mind, with this simplicity comes limitation when it comes to being able to style, change and customize your site. Simply put, WordPress sites are harder to customize and style, once you choose to go beyond the basics.
In short - if you happy with the template you find and don't wish to pick it apart and re-style it...WP is probably you best choice. If you want to be able to completely change the site design, with a massive re-coding of the site...then you will probably find a Joomla Website a better choice.
WINNER - WordPress
SEO and Search Engines
Again, WordPress wins out here. Simply due to the range of plugins and options available, that just work. Some of the Joomla plugins can be beasts to setup and get right...making SEO on Joomla a potential headache.
In saying that however, don't discard Joomla based on SEO...because its not bad out of the box, just WP is marginally better.
WINNER - WordPress
Plugin & Extension Choice
Hands down winner again here, this time Joomla. WordPress is geared towards regular content sites, such as news sites or bloggers...and as such, so is the range of extensions. Joomla has a wide range of plugins available, that will allow you to do anything...blogs, e-commerce, membership based sites and anything else under the sun. Chance are, if you want to do it, Joomla can.
WINNER - Joomla
This is the $64,000 question. But the answer is complex and multi layered. In short, both WordPress Security and Joomla Security lies with the host and most importantly with the website designer themselves. Choose a provider that has basic precautions in place to stop brute force hackers, SQL Injections and that operates Malware and Exploit scans. All of Hosting-Australia.com's Web Hosting Packages have this covered, and we also offer other security options such as SSL certificates and CMS Upgrades and Audits.
In reality, if you don't keep your Website Updated and Secure, its going to be compromised at some point, if its WordPress or Joomla.
WINNER - To close to call
Hosting-Australia.com feels the decision really needs to be based on what you want to do, and how you want to do it. If you are wanting a Photographers site, to showcase you images...go with WordPress. But if you want an e-commerce solution, with membership levels and thousands of products, you may want to look at Joomla.
